Rouse later settled in Spain and explored the country's musical traditions, although his songwriting continued to exhibit the summery, rootsy appeal of his earlier work.Īs a child, Rouse spent time in California, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, South Dakota, Georgia, and Arizona. He paid tribute to his birthplace on his 1998 debut, Dressed Up Like Nebraska, and later explored the influence of his adopted home state, Tennessee, with 2005's Nashville.
Born in Nebraska, Rouse moved to various cities throughout his childhood and subsequent musical career, driven at first by his father's military career and later by his desire to take inspiration from different environments. Other songs, such as "Jersey Clowns" paint a picture of infidelity in the lower level mafia. The first song on the album, "Quiet Town" (a homage to the Spanish community, where Josh first laid roots upon arrival), feels like you're there - curled up on the balcony of a whitewashed casita, while "Summertime" evokes memories of adolescent days past. This influence shines throughout the upbeat (and largely romantic) tenor of each song. Reflecting back on his migration to Spain after spending many years in Nashville, TN, Josh bought a plane ticket and immersed himself in the lifestyle and customs of Spanish culture. Subtitulo marks Josh Rouse's 6th full length album (and first for his new imprint, Bedroom Classics). In an amazing gatefold packaging, the vinyl version of SUBTITULO comes with exclusive artwork which differs drastically from it's sister CD version.
